About this place
Kyoto’s herring soba pairs soba noodles with herring simmered in a sweet-savoury sauce. At Hanamakiya, diners have remarked on how the herring’s sweetness and savoury flavour mingle with the dipping broth, while the noodles have a satisfying spring. Herring soba costs ¥1,690; some set meals can be changed to chilled herring and grated daikon soba.
For a more substantial meal, try the tempura rice-bowl set, served with one prawn and vegetable and mushroom tempura. Those who would rather enjoy chilled noodles and tempura separately can choose the tempura soba platter, which comes with two prawns and vegetable tempura. Diners who have tried the soba and tempura combination have also praised the variety and seasoning of the tempura.
Kyoto-style chirimen sansho rice is another possible accompaniment. One diner who ordered it with herring soba recalled that the rice, too, made for easy eating. Vegan options are also offered; a diner reported being able to choose vegetable soba made without animal-based stock.
